Dangerous streets and neighborhoods of Athens - Zone pericolose ad Atene

As I did for the nice place in Athens, i thought that it would be useful for you to know what areas you should avoid in Athens. As you can see, there are some streets coloured in blue, someone else is red. I think that in the blue streets you can go without problems (of course be careful with your camera and your wallet), but it's better to avoid that in the night. On the other hand, the red coloured streets, should be avoided all the day long. The same thing is for the coloured areas. The fact is that many hotels in the centre of Athens are nowadays in a really really bad position. Of course once it wasn't like that. But today, the entire Omonia area is a dangerous zone. Even for the Athenians. As for every city in the world, Athens is plenty of hotels in his centre, and many people doesn't know how bad is the situation near the hotel which they choose (from the moment that hotels managers don't write it down in their site...). Plus the prices in that hotels tend to be lower than others. But, believe me, it isn't worth it! The map is not complete, and I will update it as soon as it possible. In questa mappa troverete alcune zone da evitare ad Atene. Le zone in blu sono da evitare di notte, mentre di giorno non presentano particolari problemi. Le zone in rosso sono da evitare sempre e comunque. In ogni caso, la parte pericolosa di Atene (principalmente i dintorni di Omonoia) non presenta alcun tipo di interesse turistico, quindi non vi perdete niente... Il problema è che, essendo in pieno centro, sono presenti molti hotel, spesso e volentieri con tariffe convenienti. Col passare degli anni, e l'arrivo di migliaia di immigrati irregolari, il quartiere è stato abbandonato a se stesso, diventando una zona pericolosa per chiunque, ateniesi compresi. Il mio consiglio è di evitare assolutamente di pernottare da quelle parti, per evitare di trovarsi in situazioni spiacevoli e pericolose.

Athens Mass Transit System - Mezzi Pubblici - Σύστημα Μέσων Μαζικής Μεταφοράς Αθηνών

From 1st February, tickets policy for public transport in the Metropolitan Area of Athens will change.

- The ticket for all the Mass Transit System of Athens will cost 1,40€. The reduced ticket 0,70€. Is valid for 90', and there is no limitation of changes.
- The ticket for Bus, Tram, and Trolley Bus will cost 1,20€. The reduced ticket 0,60€. Is valid for one trip only.

- The daily ticket for all the Mass Transit System will cost 4€. - The weekly pass for all the Mass Transit System will cost 14€. - The ticket for Airport Lines ( X93, X95, X96, X97) will cost 5€, the reduced ticket 2,5€. - The ticket for the metro line to the Airport will cost 8€, the reduced ticket 4€ Who is entitled for the reduced ticket? - All people aged over 65 years. - All children from 7 years to 12. - All University students with a valid Student Card University I.D.  Athens has a relatively good Public Transport Service and a very good value for money. 

There are six different companies, which are coordinated by Athens Urban Transport Organization. Those companies are:

1.       ETHEL S.A. a bus network with more of 350 lines.

2.       ILPAP S.A. a trolleybus network. His fleet consists of 366 trolleybuses, which cover a distance of 12 million kilometers and transports 80 million passengers per year (2007 data).

3.       TRAM S.A. which  includes three lines:

                                I.            Line 3 Thukididis, from SEF to Asklipio Voula.

                              II.            Line 4 Aristotelis from Syntagma to SEF.

                            III.            Line 5 Platonas  from Syntagma to Asklipio Voula.

The tram operates daily from 05:00 am to 01:00 am while on Fridays and Saturdays it operates 24 hours.

4.       ISAP S.A. is the oldest urban rapid transit system of Athens. Today the only Line connects the port of Piraeus with the suburb of Kifissia. Mostly of times, this line is indicated as metro line 1 (green). In fact it is owned by a separated company. 

5.       AMEL S.A.is the company which owns and controls the Metro of Athens. Today there are two lines even thought, as already said, the ISAP line could be part of metro network. Those lines are: 

                                I.            Line 2 (red) connects Aghios Antonios in Peristeri with Agios Dimitrios. The first train depart sun -thu on 05:30, and the last on 00:06, fri – sat the last departs on 02:06. By 2010 this line is supposed to be extended, and once the works will finish the line will start in Anthoupoli and end in Elliniko.

                              II.            Line 3 (blue) connects Aigaleo with Athens International Airport. Starts sun – thu at 05:30, ends at 00:09, fri – sat ends at 02:09¹ By 2010 the stations of Haidari, Holargos and Agia Paraskevi will be added to the metro network.

6.       TRAINOSE is the company which controls the suburban railway named “Proastiakos”. Today there are two lines:

                                I.            Piraeus – Kiato , connecting the Port of Athens (Piraeus) with the town of Kiato (about 30 km north-weast of Corinth). The journey takes 1h43’, and there is a train every 1h. The first one is on 04:36 and the last on 22:44. The ticket costs 8 €

                              II.            Ano Liosia – Athens International Airport. This line connects Ano Liosia (a suburb in the northwest part of Athens) with the airport. The journey takes 31’. This service begins on 06:06, and ends at 00:06. There is a train every 15’ and the ticket costs 6 €.

Of course you can get use the Proastiakos to move inside Athens Area. In that case, the ticket is 1 €, and is the same for all the other mode of transport.

Dal 1 febbraio sono in vigore nuovi prezzi per il trasporto pubblico ad Atene.

- Il biglietto unico per tutti i mezzi pubblici, della durata di 1h30' (vedi sotto), costa 1,40€. Il ridotto 0,70€. - Il biglietto per autobus, tram e filobus, valevole per un'unica corsa costa 1,20€. Il ridotto 0,60€. - Il biglietto giornaliero per tutti i mezzi costa 4€. - il biglietto settimanale per tutti i mezzi costa 14€. - Il biglietto per le linee degli autobus per l'aeroporto (X93, X95, X96, X97) costa 5€. Il ridotto 2,50€. - Il biglietto per la metropolitana per l'aeroporto costa 8€. Il ridotto 4€.  Atene è dotata di un buon servizio di trasporti pubblici, coordinato dall’OASA. Il biglietto, per quanto riguarda l’area metropolitana , è unico.  Costa 1,40€ (gli studenti con relativo tesserino pagano 0,70€)ed è valido per 1h30’, senza limitazioni di tragitti. Se, allo scadere del tempo a voi a disposizione, vi trovate ancora a bordo, si deve timbrare una seconda volta il biglietto, estendendo così la validità fino alla discesa dal mezzo. La multa prevista per i trasgressori corrisponde al prezzo del biglietto moltiplicato per sessanta volte.  Le aziende che svolgono tale servizio sono sei:

1)    ETHEL S.A. ovvero la compagnia di autobus urbani, che gestisce più di 350 linee

2)    ILPAP S.A.  controlla i filobus cittadini. La flotta consiste in 366 mezzi che trasportano       80 milioni di passeggeri l’anno, percorrendo circa 12 milioni di chilometri (dati del 2007).

3)    TRAM S.A. azienda relativamente giovane, gestisce il trasporto su tram. Le linee operative sono tre:

                                I.            Linea 3 Thukididis, collega lo stadio SEF con Asklipio, Voula          

                              II.            Linea 4  Aristotelis, collega Piazza Syntagma con lo stadio SEF

                            III.            Linea 5 Platonas, collega Syntagma con Asklipio, Voula

I tram circolano dalla domenica al giovedì dalle ore 05:00 alle ore 01:00, mentre nei giorni di venerdì e sabato sono in funzione 24 ore su 24.

4)    ISAP S.A. fondata nel lontano 1869, rappresenta la prima metropolitana ateniese.  

                Oggi tale linea collega il porto del Pireo con il comune di Kifisia (attualmente  il tratto tra Monastiraki e Attiki è fuori servizio). Nonostante non faccia parte dell’azienda che gestisce la metropolitana ateniese, viene definita come linea 1 (colore verde). I greci sono soliti chiamarla ‘’treno’’, per distinguerla dalla metropolitana vera e propria.

5)    AMEL S.A. è invece la metropolitana, composta da due linee, la 2 (colore rosso) e la

3 (colore blu). Questo perché, come detto, la linea 1 è considerata essere la metropolitana leggera di cui al punto precedente.

La linea 2 si muove tra la stazione di Aghios Antonios (Comune di Peristeri) alla stazione di Aghios Dimitrios (nel comune omonimo)

La linea 3 collega il comune di Egaleo con l’aeroporto di Atene.

6)    TRAINOSE S.A. è l’azienda che controlla il ‘Proastiakos’, ovvero la ferrovia suburbana

      di Atene. Oggi è composta da due linee:

                                I.            Pireo – Kiato (comune a circa trenta km da Corinto). Il viaggio dura 1h43’ ed è presente un collegamento ogni ora tra le 04:36 e le 22:44. Il prezzo del biglietto è di 8€.

                              II.            Ano Liossia (comune della periferia occidentale di Atene) – Aeroporto. Il collegamento avviene in 31’, ogni 15’, tra le 06:06 e le 00:06. Il prezzo del biglietto è di 6€.

                Nel caso vogliate spostarvi all’interno dell’area metropolitana di Atene, il prezzo del biglietto è di 1€, come per tutti gli altri mezzi pubblici 

If you have decided to come to Greece by ship (arriving in Patras), and you don’t have your car, you have two choices: to go to Athens by train, so click there, or to go by coach. Private company KTEL (ΚΤΕΛ) offers you the possibility to reach Athens by coach, in three hours more or less.
The bus will arrive in Kifissou Bus Station, on Kifissou Ave, from where you can get the bus 051 which will take you near Omonia Square, where there is a metro station. Unfortunately, there is not another line. Taking the 051 you’ll arrive at the corner of streets Menandrou (Μενάνδρου) and Vilara (Βηλαρά), approximately 200 m from Omonia Square. There may be your hotel. If not, you can caught the metro (line 1 and 2) or take another bus (I suggest you the metro).
Menandrou st is known as a dangerous place where immigrants without permission can rob you. When I took the 051, some years ago, I hadn’t had any problem but I cannot say that I wasn’t a bit scared. I don’t want to scare you, just be careful – especially during night hours, and probably nothing will happen to you. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Kifissou Ave.
P.S. to Kifissou station don’t arrive only coaches from Patras, but I believed that it was more useful for you.


Se avete intenzione di andare in Grecia in nave (arrivando a Patrasso), e non avete una macchina, avete due possibilità: raggiungere Atene in treno, allora cliccate qui, o prendere il pullman.
La compagnia privata KTEL (ΚΤΕΛ), vi da la possibilità di raggiungere Atene in circa tre ore.
Il pullman arrivera alla stazione dei pullamn di Kifissou, situata sull’omonimo viale. Da lì, per raggiungere il centro, potete prendere l’autobus numero 051, che vi lascerà all’incrocio delle strade Menandrou (Μενάνδρου) e Vilara (Βηλαρά), a circa 200 metri da Piazza Omonia. Lì potrebbe trovarsi il vostro hotel; se così non fosse, prendete la metropolitana (linea 1 e 2) o un altro autobus (tuttavia vi consiglio la metro, è più comoda e di certo non vi lascerà a grande distanza dal vostro albergo!).
Menandrou ha la fama di essere letteralmente invasa da immigrati clandestini, i quali possono borseggiare i passanti. Questo è un esempio tipico del degrado che ha colpito alcune zone centrali di Atene. Quando io ho usato la linea 051, qualche anno fa, non ho avuto nessun problema, anche se il degrado generale che mi circondava mi causò un notevole disturbo. Non vi voglio spaventare, solo avvertirvi. State attenti (soprattutto se vi muovete dopo il tramonto, come è capitato a me), e non vi dovrebbe succedere nulla.
Alternativamente, potete prendere un taxi da Viale Kifissou.
P.S. alla stazione dei pullman di Kifissou non arrivano solo linee da Patrasso, ma ho ritenuto che fosse questo il collegamento che più di altri vi potesse interessare.


Εάν σχεδιάζεται να έρθετε στην Ελλάδα με πλοίο (φθάνοντας στην Πάτρα), και δεν έχετε αυτοκίνητο, τότε έχετε δυο δυνατότητες: να πάτε στην Αθήνα με τραίνο, τότε κάντε κλικ εδώ, και να πάρετε λεωφορείο.

Η εταιρία ΚΤΕΛ σας δίνει τη δυνατότητα να φθάσετε στην Αθήνα σε περίπου τρεις ώρες.
Το πούλμαν θα σας αφήσει στο σταθμό των ΚΤΕΛ της Λεωφόρου Κηφισού, από όπου θα πάρετε το λεωφορείο 051 για την Ομόνοια. Συγκεκριμένα, η αφετηρία είναι στη διασταύρωση των οδών Μενάνδρου και Βηλαρά, η οποία βρίσκεται περίπου 200 μ από την Πλατεία Ομονοίας. Εκεί ίσως να βρίσκεται ο προορισμός σας. Αν δεν είναι έτσι, μπορείτε να πάρετε το μετρό (γραμμή 1 και 2) ή, αν είστε πιο έμπυροι, ένα άλλο λεωφορείο. Η οδός Μενάνδρου, όπως ίσως να γνωρίζεται, είναι γνωστή για τον κίνδυνο κλοπής από παράνομοι μετανάστες που βρίσκουν καταφύγιο σε αυτό το σημείο της πόλης. Αυτό είναι ένα άλλο παράδειγμα της τραγικής κατάστασης στην οποία βρίσκεται μέρος του κέντρου της Αθήνας. Όταν εγώ έκανα αυτή τη διαδρομή, πριν λίγα χρόνια, δεν είχα κανένα πρόβλημα, αν και θα ήταν ψέματα να πω ότι δεν τρόμαξα από την κατάσταση γύρο μου. Δε θέλω να σας τρομάζω, απλά να σας προειδοποιήσω. Να προσέχετε (ειδικά αν κινήστε μετά το σούρουπο, όπως έτυχε σε ‘μενα) και το πιο πιθανό είναι να μην πάθετε τίποτα.
Διαφορετικά, μπορείτε να πάρετε ένα ταξί από την Κηφισού.
Υ.Γ. στο σταθμό Κηφισού καταφθάνουν πολλά περισσότερα πούλμαν, όχι μόνο από την Πάτρα, απλά θεωρώ ότι αυτό μπορεί να σας ενδιαφέρει περισσότερο.

I'm attending the undergraduate course in Business Administration at Athens University of Economics and Business. My interests more or less are: politics, both national and international, Photography, Art in general, going out eating and drinking, discovering new places and going for a walk, alone or with friends! I like very much living in Athens, although is quite a crazy city... you have to understand that, or you'll never be able to live in here! I think that is a great place to live, but certainly is plenty of problems... for these reasons i decided to open this blog, where you can find some (i hope) usefully informations!
